Listen to John Mayer on iHeartRadio | Listen to Katy Perry on iHeartRadio

John Mayer had a few words for his on-again, off-again girlfriend Katy Perry as he returned to the road this weekend.  He took the stage Saturday night in Wisconsin for his first proper headlining show since doctors repaired a granuloma in his throat last summer.  And according to "Rolling Stone," Mayer thanked Perry during the show, explaining that she took the time to "continue to get to know [him] and love [him]" as he dealt with and recovered from his vocal impairment.

Mayer also dedicated the concert's closing number - "A Face to Call Home" - to Perry, adding that she is his "face to call home."  Mayer and Perry supposedly broke up back in March, although they reportedly spent the Fourth of July holiday together.

Meanwhile, "Rolling Stone" also notes that Mayer has made a few changes to his live performance to accommodate his history of vocal issues.  He sang many of his songs in a lower vocal register, and even nixed all the falsetto from one of his biggest hits, "Waiting on the World to Change." He also used a vocal-chord lubricating throat spray to help him get through the night.

Mayer is scheduled to continue the trek - which supports both last year's Born and Raised and next month's new album Paradise Valley - on Tuesday with a show in Cincinnati, Ohio.
