Spinal Tap to Reunite for 35th Anniversary Performance, Film Screening

Christopher Guest, Harry Shearer and Michael McKean will reunite for the 35th anniversary of their beloved rock and roll mockumentary, This Is Spinal Tap, at the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival.

The three actors will reprise their Spinal Tap characters from the film and perform following the screening.

The film's director and co-writer and co-star, Rob Reiner, will also join in for a conversation with the band members.

Although it took years for This Is Spinal Tap to find its niche, the film's hilariously realistic portrayal of the pitfalls of rock stardom eventually made it essential viewing for musicians and rock fanatics worldwide. In 1992 Spinal Tap became a "real" band, reuniting for a second album, Break Like the Wind, and a tour.

Guest, Shearer and McKean over the years have done many more performances and interviews in character. The band members Nigel Tufnel (Guest), Derek Smalls (Shearer) and David St. Hubbins (McKean) have also maintained a hysterically contentious relationship with Reiner's character Marty Di Bergi. Fans at the screening can look forward to seeing that farce play out on stage after the screening.

The exact date of the festivities has yet to be announced. The Tribeca Film Festival 2019 runs from April 24 to May 5.

Spinal Tap last performed together nearly a decade ago upon the released of the band's Back From the Dead album.

This past year, Shearer reprised his role for a solo album as Smalls titled Smalls Change (Meditations Upon Ageing)
