JHS: Read to Shelter Pets in Celebration of Read Across America Day

In celebration of National Read Across America Day, the Jacksonville Humane Society (JHS) is inviting people of all ages to come read to their dogs and cats on Friday, March 1, 2024 - anytime between 12:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.!

From 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., in addition to reading, family-friendly activities will be available including free book giveaways for all participants while supplies last, a JHS scavenger hunt, and crafts for the dogs and cats at JHS.

Reading out loud is a wonderful form of enrichment for animals in shelters – it lowers their stress levels, helps them feel calmer in their kennels, and also helps them feel more comfortable around people. It is also a great way for children to practice their literacy skills and build reading confidence in a fun, non-judgmental setting.

Plus, children of all ages can join JHS’s Pawsitive Reading Program with a parent or guardian and volunteer to read out loud to the pets at JHS all year round.

Read Across America Day at JHS is made possible thanks to generous program support from The Jim Moran Foundation.
